The innards of one of the candy dispensers in the Optometry building at U of W. I've always liked the way these things are lit.

As I've been watching all my photographs slideshow past in screensaver mode the more I realize what kind of photographer I am. I've realized that it's never really about the subject when I shoot. It's about the shape and the composition. The lines and the balance. It completely explains why I find it so difficult to do good landscapes. Thanks Karney Li for your composition comment. It got me thinking.
This is another of my new rediscovered favourites. A rusty hinge on a barn in the middle of Waterloo Park.

For my birthday last year we ended up visiting the Halton County Radial Railway. I used up about 2 rolls of film there. Beautiful place to visit. This is one of the dead trains set aside to rust.

Yesterday I decided that I never really look at my pictures after they've been posted here. So I downloaded my images folder and set up a slideshow screensaver. And over the past day I've rediscovered many favourites, even some that have never made it here yet. This is one.

I'm going stircrazy waiting for the spring rains to begin. Instead, I will settle for a rainfall from last October.

Last summer I bought a cute little fountain at Zehrs. It lasted a couple months before the minerals in our water clogged it beyond repair. I spent one day trying to capture the appeal of it. This is my closest shot.

We went on a mini road trip yesterday to William Dam Seeds with Miss Sara and my Mom. Planting season is coming really soon and my garden will bloom not long after. I bought a packet of "tall" Nasturtiums -- kind of like this one.
This is one of the *very* few flash shots I have. Don't like flash, never have.

We spent most of yesterday afternoon discussing cars so I think this shot from last summer suits today just fine. It's the car I'd lean towards getting if we could afford it -- the Toyota Corolla.

Another photograph from the CEIT building. I really enjoyed the clean lines of the architecture.

Way back in October our brilliant wonderful neighbours had a wild party that ended up with several things destroyed (journal entry from the day after). Including this bike. It had the wheels twisted and destroyed and was tossed into the middle of the backyard. Where I photographed it 10 days later covered in frost.

In the waiting room of the optometry clinic (University of Waterloo) there were these slightly freaky statues suspended in the air and attached to the walls. Because I was 20 minutes early for my appointment I ended up staring at them and then finally taking several photographs.
This one just says "Leap of Faith", or you know, "leap onto your head"... whichever.

I have this serious love of high contrast colour anything. I think it makes most anything look lush and rich. So here's another image nice and contrasty.

Occasionally I pull out my old proof sheets to look at and spend time debating the cost of getting the prints made up. The top sheet here has never been enlarged and has some of my best portraiture with my favourite model, my sister.

Another photo from the CEIT building. From this perspective it's a fascinating play of light and composition... it's not just a neat ceiling.

The new CEIT building on the University of Waterloo campus was really interestingly lit with all this concrete, plain and polished. A wonderful example of man-made beauty.
I'm using this picture as my entry in the March 4, 2004 Theme Thursday - Desperation. Because in some ways it's exactly what my years of desperate survival looked like to me. I knew that there was an exit, filled with light so near but impossible to achieve because I had no idea how to get there.

Yesterday I took the Olympus with me to my Optometry appointment just as an afterthought. I came home with a new prescription and over 60 images (with a final boildown of 18 that I will publish here). This was the photograph that started my impromptu shoot of the University of Waterloo.

We ended up going out for dinner at Burger King. I bought 3 whoppers for a $1 each and gave the one I was bringing home to Mike to a homeless guy panhandling outside instead.
