I first imagined A Place to Fly as a community site back in 1999. It was created on pages and pages of notes in my paper journal in various coffee shops in Toronto. I carried the dream of the site and that journal for years before I started seriously believing I could make it real.
In early 2001 with the help of my friends, online and off, my notes started to become a website. Six sections ranging in concept from Broken Wings to Touching the Sky (aka Betrayal to Freedom).
From that first about page, in answer to "What was the dream?":
"To create somewhere that people could share their stories, their selves, their journeys through this beautiful overwhelming sky we call life. To create a community similar to the ones I’ve experienced in therapy, online and in my friendships. I wanted to give people a place to show what they CAN do without fear. A place to share the things that have broken us and left us feeling shattered. A place to share our hopes, dreams and goals. To give a chance to help someone else and in so doing, help us further along our own journeys. Last but never least to share our stories of power and strength and what our personal skies look like."
Over the next couple years I realized that creating a community takes a lot of work, a more outgoing admin, and a lot of pure chance. I finally came to the decision that I wasn't going to allow this site to sit gathering dust any longer in the early summer of 2002 and started the slow changeover to a personal site.
Updating was still done by notepad and ftp, and too much work for lazy old me. So PtF kept gathering dust until Mike helped me install moveable type at the end of May 2003. Over the past 2 months I've been slowly tweaking MT to where I want it, posting fairly regularly and moving over my old journal entries from various places.
This index page is the last changeover to MT format I need to do. I still have to put something in my etc. section, but that can wait. It's waited over a year now, what's the rush?
So that's what A Place to Fly has been, stay tuned and see what it becomes. Ok?
